Cognitive Assessment

Wrong date input to Wrong date input

Understanding how your child learns, thinks, and processes information.

A Cognitive Assessment helps families gain a clear picture of a child’s learning profile—including problem‑solving skills, memory, attention, processing speed, and reasoning. This insight supports targeted intervention, classroom adjustments, and confident next steps. Assessments are available in‑clinic (Derrimut), at home or school across Melbourne’s west and north, or via telehealth where appropriate, giving families flexible access to meaningful support.

Who this is for

A Cognitive Assessment is recommended when parents, teachers, or health professionals have noticed:

  • Learning difficulties or uneven academic progress (e.g., stronger verbal skills but weaker working memory).
  • Challenges with attention, planning, organisation, or problem‑solving, including suspected executive functioning differences.
  • Concerns about school readiness or educational placement.
  • Behaviours that may reflect underlying cognitive strengths or processing challenges, such as frustration with multi‑step tasks or difficulty retaining information.
  • The need for clarity around a child’s developmental stage, abilities, and supports required to learn effectively.

These assessments help build an accurate picture of what is happening beneath the surface—crucial information for personalised learning plans and therapeutic programs.

What the assessment involves

Our Cognitive Assessment process combines standardised testing, developmental analysis, and functional observation to produce a comprehensive understanding of your child’s thinking and learning skills.

1) Intake & developmental history

We begin by gathering information about your child’s developmental milestones, learning experiences, and your goals for assessment. This aligns with SLCN’s holistic approach to mapping strengths and needs across the eight key developmental areas.

2) Standardised cognitive assessment

Your clinician administers structured, evidence‑based tools to measure core cognitive processes such as:

  • Verbal and non‑verbal reasoning
  • Working memory
  • Processing speed
  • Attention and executive functioning
  • Visual‑spatial and problem‑solving skills

Cognitive measures may be paired with academic or adaptive assessments if needed, consistent with best‑practice approaches for understanding learning and developmental needs.

3) Functional assessment across SLCN’s developmental areas

We consider your child’s cognitive skills within the broader context of their everyday functioning—communication, play, daily living, motor abilities, social‑emotional skills, social thinking, and classroom learning. This ensures recommendations are deeply practical and connected to real‑world success.

4) Collaboration with schools and caregivers

Following SLCN’s collaborative model, information from teachers or other professionals may be incorporated to ensure the assessment captures a full, multi‑environment picture.

5) Feedback & written report

You receive a clear, plain‑language report outlining:

  • Your child’s learning strengths and challenges
  • How their cognitive profile affects schoolwork, daily routines, behaviour, and skill development
  • Evidence‑based strategies and support options
  • Recommendations for home, school, therapy, and further assessments (if needed)

Our approach reflects the emphasis on meaningful, strengths‑focused feedback seen in SLCN’s assessment and therapy processes.

What you’ll walk away with

  • A detailed understanding of how your child learns—and why certain tasks feel easy or difficult.
  • Targeted strategies to support learning, independence, and confidence.
  • A roadmap for school supports, including individual education planning where appropriate.
  • Insights that inform therapy choices, parent coaching, or behavioural supports.
  • A comprehensive report to share with educators, health professionals, or funding bodies (if required).

This helps families move from uncertainty to clarity, and from clarity to action.

After the assessment: next steps

Depending on your child’s needs, we can provide:

  • Parent Coaching, helping families embed cognitive and executive functioning supports into daily routines.
  • Therapies such as psychology, occupational therapy, speech therapy, social skills development, or executive‑function programs.
  • Collaboration with your child’s school to help implement evidence‑based classroom strategies and learning adjustments.
