Communication Friendly Settings - Primary

Wrong date input to Wrong date input

Effective communication is fundamental to a child's development and learning. Recognizing this, SLCN offers the Communication Friendly Settings (CFS) programme for primary schools, designed to create an environment that supports the communication and language development of all pupils.

What is the CFS Programme?

SLCN's CFS programme is a comprehensive training initiative aimed at equipping school staff with the knowledge and strategies needed to foster a communication-friendly environment. The programme begins with selected staff members completing the Speech and Language Support for 5-11s course. These staff members, known as Lead Communication Practitioners (LCPs), then cascade their learning to the entire school through a series of five bite-sized training sessions called Communication Counts.

Key Components of the Training

  1. Speech and Language Support for 5-11s: This initial course provides in-depth knowledge about speech, language, and communication development in children. It includes practical strategies to support children with communication needs.
  2. Communication Counts: This is a condensed version of the initial course, delivered by LCPs to all school staff. It covers essential topics such as effective communication, adult-child interaction, and strategies to support receptive and expressive language.
  3. Audit and Accreditation: Upon completion of the training, schools undergo an audit to assess the implementation of communication-friendly practices. Successful schools receive a Communication Friendly status, accredited by Elklan and OCN London.

Benefits of the CFS Programme

  • Enhanced Learning Environment: By fostering effective communication, schools create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students.
  • Professional Development: Staff members gain valuable skills and knowledge, enhancing their ability to support students with diverse communication needs.
  • Accreditation: Achieving Communication Friendly status is a mark of excellence, demonstrating a school's commitment to supporting every child's communication development[2].
