The NDIS and early intervention

18 June 2022

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding for disability support and services. The scheme is designed to provide people with disabilities the same opportunities as everyone else, including access to education, employment and social participation.

Early intervention is a key part of the NDIS. It helps children with disabilities develop the skills they need to participate in everyday activities. Early intervention can also help families get the support they need to care for their child.

The NDIS and early intervention: what's the difference?

Early intervention is different from disability support. Early intervention focuses on helping children with disabilities develop the skills they need to participate in everyday activities. Disability support focuses on helping people with disabilities live independently and participate in the community.

What is early intervention?

Early intervention is a process that starts when a child is diagnosed with a disability. It involves working with families and other professionals to develop a plan for the child's development. Early intervention can include:

  • therapy, such as speech therapy or occupational therapy,
  • education, such as special education classes or support at mainstream school
  • family support, such as respite care or counselling.

Early intervention is important because it can help children with disabilities reach their full potential. It can also help families get the support they need to care for their child. Early intervention services are provided by a range of different organisations, including government agencies, non-government organisations and private providers.

What is the NDIS?

The NDIS is a new way of providing support for people with disabilities. The scheme provides funding for disability support and services. The NDIS is designed to provide people with disabilities the same opportunities as everyone else, including access to education, employment and social participation.

The NDIS is different from early intervention because it focuses on helping people with disabilities live independently and participate in the community. The NDIS can help people with disabilities get the support they need to:

  • live independently
  • find a job
  • access education and training
  • participate in the community.

The NDIS also provides funding for early intervention services. This means that children with disabilities can get the support they need to develop the skills they need to participate in everyday activities.
